Worried that AI may replace drivers, render many jobless: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed concerns that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) may in future replace drivers and consequently lead to unemployment for many people. .The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking proper implementation of the government's policies aimed at promoting the purchase and use of Electric Vehicles (EV).During the hearing, Justice Kant expressed a worry that the AI may affect the employment of drivers. "My worry is that the AI should not eliminate the employment of these drivers...In India driver (job), it is a big source of employment," the Court remarked. .On a lighter note, Justice Kant also said even advocates may face competition from the AI-based tools."AI itself is fast growing technology. One module becomes obsolete in months. Right now we have seen AI based advocates....he has argued in USA. We are worried about Bar.".The PIL for EVs was filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation which was represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan. He stressed on the importance of EVs in addressing the environmental concerns and pointed out that India has 14 of the total 15 most polluted cities in the world."All I am seeking is that the government should implement its own policy," he said. .The Court, however, said it is not just the government but other institutions also which have to come forward. Bhushan responded that the government must provide the basic infrastructure. He went on to highlight cases where charging points are available only after a distance of 400 kms..The Attorney General (AG) R Venkataramani, appearing for the government, today sought time to apprise the Court on the policy decisions made by the Union government from time to time to promote the use of EVs. The Court proceeded to list the matter for hearing on May 14.
