Justices Jyoti Singh and Amit Bansal of Delhi High Court have been named among Managing Intellectual Property's (Managing IP) "50 Most Influential People in IP in 2024.".Justice Jyoti Singh earned recognition for her landmark decision in April 2024, awarding record damages of ₹217 crores ($26 million) to Communication Components Antenna (CCA) in a 14-year-long patent dispute with Mobi Antenna Technologies. This ruling not only concluded a protracted 14- year legal battle but also set a new standard for calculating damages based on lost profits, emphasising the necessity of robust evidence in patent disputes. The damages awarded to CCA, which was the highest-ever granted in India based on lost profits, marked a historic precedent in Indian patent litigation. "Justice Singh's adept handling of complex legal issues, including patent validity and damages computation, underscores her profound impact on the IP legal landscape," MIP said..Similarly, Justice Amit Bansal was celebrated for his March 2024 ruling in a standard-essential patents (SEPs) case, awarding ₹244 crores ($29 million) to Ericsson against Indian handset maker Lava. This case, notable for being the first in India to determine FRAND royalty rates for SEPs after a full trial, positioned India as a viable jurisdiction for high-stakes SEP disputes."Justice Bansal's ruling, in which he calculated damages based on the end device and adjusted royalty rates proportionally considering that one of Ericsson's patents was invalidated, reflects a sophisticated understanding of both national and international patent jurisprudence," MIP stated.
