Supreme Court using AI only for case management, not for judgments/ orders: Law Minister

The Supreme Court is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) tools into case management but not for decision-making or to render judgments or orders, Union Minister (in-charge) of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal has clarified in a Parliamentary response..“As per the information provided by the Supreme Court of India, no AI and ML based tools are being used by the Supreme Court of India in the decision-making processes, as of now,” the response read. .The response stated that the Supreme Court has begun using AI and ML tools to streamline case management. One of the key applications is AI-assisted transcriptions of oral arguments during Constitution Bench hearings, which are now accessible on the Supreme Court’s website. There are plans to expand the service to regular hearing days (Thursdays). "Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) based tools are being deployed in case management. They are being used in transcribing of oral arguments in Constitution Bench matters. The AI assisted transcribed arguments can be accessed from the website of the Supreme Court. The competent authority has directed to consider the transcribing of oral arguments on regular hearing days i.e. Thursdays,” the response said. .Additionally, the Court is leveraging AI to translate judgments from English into 18 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), aims to enhance accessibility to legal documents for citizens across the country. Judgments can be accessed through the eSCR (electronic Supreme Court Reports) portal..The response also revealed that the Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court Efficiency (SUPACE), an AI-based tool designed to analyse case facts and identify relevant precedents, is currently in an experimental stage. Its deployment awaits the procurement of advanced hardware, such as graphic processing units and tensor processing units.Moreover, the Supreme Court's Registry is testing AI and ML tools for defect identification in legal filings, in collaboration with IIT Madras.
