The Supreme Court on Friday initiated an in-house inquiry into Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma after a huge pile of unaccounted cash was recovered from his residence..The apex court has also sought a report from Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, highly placed sources told Bar & Bench.A fire at the judge's house had inadvertently led to the recovery of cash by the firefighters, ToI reported.The Supreme Court Collegium had then decided to repatriate Justice Varma back to the Allahabad High Court, his parent High Court.However, at a full court meeting of all Supreme Court judges held on Friday morning, it was suggested that a punitive transfer will not be enough and some concrete action has to be taken against the judge.The full court then unanimously agreed to an in-house probe, with transfer as the first step. The transfer is under process, though it is yet to be cleared by the government. Meanwhile, Justice Varma did not hold court today and his court staff revealed in open court that he was on leave..Justice Varma was born in 1969. He completed his LL.B. degree from Madhya Pradesh's Rewa University and enrolled as an advocate in 1992. As a lawyer, he served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and as chief standing counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh.He was designated a Senior Advocate in 2013 and was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court in October 2014. He was made a permanent judge in February 2016. He was later transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he assumed office on October 11, 2021.
