151 temporary chambers of advocates that were allegedly constructed illegally were demolished from roadside areas around the Collectorate and district court premises in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, reported the Hindustan Times..According to the HT report, a joint team comprising officials from the administration, police, and Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) began the demolition drive at 4 AM using a JCB.The operation, which lasted around 90 minutes, also cleared about half a dozen roadside kiosks along with the advocate chambers. The report adds that district court lawyers halted work yesterday to protest the demolition. The District Advocates Association has also demanded alternative seating arrangements for its members..The PMC had reportedly set a deadline last week for the removal of these chambers, issuing notices that were pasted on the structures. When they were not vacated by June 10 evening, officials proceeded with the demolition early morning on June 11.Last week, the PMC had also cleared encroachments under the flyover outside the Allahabad High Court..The HT report also says that during the protest, advocates resorted to stone-pelting, damaging PMC vehicles, vandalising the PMC zonal office in Katra and blocking the road outside the district court. However, the District Advocates Association is said to have later held talks with officials, and the road blockade was lifted around noon. On Wednesday evening, a delegation comprising current and former office bearers of the association is reported to have visited the Municipal Corporation for discussions.Following an hour-long meeting with PMC officials, it has reportedly been agreed that a proposal will be submitted to construct a building on the land opposite the SSP office to accommodate advocates' chambers.
