The Punjab Government on May 27 appointed recently retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice Sureshwar Thakur, as the Chairman of the Punjab State Commission for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)..Justice Thakur retired from the Punjab and Haryana High Court on May 16, 2025, after over 11 years of service as a High Court judge. .Justice Thakur was born in 1963. He was appointed a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2014. His father, Hira Singh Thakur, was also a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.Justice Thakur obtained his law degree from the Himachal Pradesh University and commenced practice at the High Court of Himachal Pradesh in 1987. He has served as an additional Central Government Standing Counsel between 1994 and 2000.In 2001, he was appointed an Additional District and Sessions Judge. After being posted in this capacity in several districts, he went on to serve as District and Sessions Judge, Kinnaur at Rampur from June 2005 till October 2005.He went to work as the Presiding Officer, Labour Court, Kangra at Dharamshala; as the District and Sessions Judge, Bilaspur; the President of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Shimla; the District and Sessions Judge, Sirmaur at Nahan; and the District and Sessions Judge, Kangra at Dharamshala.He was appointed the Registrar at the High Court of Himachal Pradesh in 2013, in which capacity he served for a year.He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in May 2014. He took oath as a Judge of the High Court in November 2014..Later, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he took oath and assumed office on October 25, 2021.
