The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday flagged the “nuisance” created by two-wheeler riders attempting to perform wheelies and other stunts across the city and asked the State what it was doing to curb the same..“And government, what about implementing the already existing laws? In Bangalore, we find in certain areas, youngsters, teenagers and those in early 20s, three persons riding on a scooter or a motorbike, doing wheelies, not wearing helmets. And police do not take any action against them. What is the government doing about that. It is a huge nuisance. So many accidents and deaths are taking place because of that. Anyone who lives in Bangalore knows that,” a Bench of Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice MI Arun observed..The Court made the observation while hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed in 2023 by one Dr Archana Bhat K, seeking directions to the State to implement the safety standards set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. These include requiring children riding pillion on two wheelers to wear a safety harness and a crash helmet..The State told the Court that it had recently conducted a meeting with all stakeholders and realised that there existed only one manufacturer in the country that made helmets for children below four years.Appearing for the State, Advocate Niloufer Akbar also told the Court that such helmets weighed 750 grams each and were too heavy for children. She sought more time from the Court to submit more details. The Court accordingly granted the State time till the second week of March.
