Madras High Court's Justice Sathya Narayana Prasad passes away

He reportedly experienced discomfort at his residence and was rushed to a private hospital in Chennai, where he died due to cardiac arrest.

Justice J. Sathya Narayana Prasad, a sitting Judge of the Madras High Court, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, at the age of 56. The Madras Bar Association released a condolence message confirming the same.

He reportedly experienced discomfort at his residence and was rushed to a private hospital in Chennai, where he died due to cardiac arrest.

Born on March 15, 1969, at Thanjavur, Justice Prasad hailed from a family with a strong legal background. His father late R Jaiprasad served as a District & Sessions Judge in various districts including Madurai, Kanyakumari and Krishnagiri.

In October 2022, a Division Bench of a Division Bench of Justices R Mahadevan (now Supreme Court judge) and Sathya Narayana Prasad disposed of 2,085 cases in 20 days.

The Bench passed orders on around 700 writ petitions, around 1,100 miscellaneous cases and several Public Interest Litigation (PILs) that had been pending for several years.

In April 2024, Justice Prasad directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a status report on the probe conducted so far into allegation of misappropriation of funds meant for housing of the poor under the Central government's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-G) and the State’s own Chief Minister Solar Powered Green Housing Scheme.
