Former Supreme Court judge Justice Dinesh Maheshwari has been appointed as Chairperson of the 23rd Law Commission of India..Advocate Hitesh Jain and Prof. DP Verma have been appointed as full time members of the Commission.They assumed charge on April 15, 2025 and their tenure will last till August 31, 2027.The same was announced via a post on the official X handle of the Ministry of Law and Justice. .Justice Maheshwari practiced as a lawyer for over two decades in Rajasthan before he was elevated to the Bench of the Rajasthan High Court in 2004. He later served as a judge of the Allhabad High Court, Chief Justice of the Meghayala High Court and Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.He was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2019 and served as a judge of the top court till his retirement in May 2023. .Hitesh Jain is the Managing Partner of Parinam Law Associates and Vice President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mumbai Pradesh.He has been a practicing lawyer for over two decades with experience in civil, criminal, commercial and constitutional matters. He has also acted as a Special Counsel for the State of Maharashtra in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India..Prof. Verma was a full time member of the 22nd Law Commission of India.He has over four decades experience in the field of legal education especially in public international law, jurisprudence and human rights law.He served as Additional Director (Research & Training), National Judicial Academy from 2017 to 2020. .The Law Commission of India is a non-statutory body and is constituted by a notification of the Central governmen with definite terms of reference.'As per its terms of reference, 23rd Law Commission's is tasked with identifying obsolete laws and recommending which of those need to be repealed or amended. It will also have to look into measures that may be adopted which can improve access to justice and judicial administration.
