Five petitions Supreme Court will hear against Waqf Amendment Act

In order to avoid overcrowding in the court and confusion in conducting the court proceedings, Supreme Court on Thursday directed that only five petitions will be heard by the Court against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. .The Bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan clarified that all other petitions, which are about close to 65, will be treated as intervention or impleadment applications in the five petitions. The five petitioners, who will be heard, were nominated by the petitioners themselves after the Court's direction today..Waqf Amendment Act: Centre tells Supreme Court it will not constitute Waqf boards, de-notify existing waqf for now.The five petitions which the Court will hear are:.1. Arshad Madani v. Union of India - Madani is an Islamic scholar and current principal of Darul Uloom Deoband.2. Muhammad Jameel Merchant v. Union of India - Merchant is a social activist.3. Mohammed Fazlurrahim & Anr. v. Union of India & Ors. - Fazlurrahim is the General Secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board.4. Sheikh Noorul Hassan v. The Union of India & Ors. - Manipur National People’s Party MLA5. Asaduddin Owaisi v. Union of India - President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament representing Hyderabad..Advocate Ejaz Maqbool is the nodal counsel for the petitioners. Advocate Kanu Agrawal is the nodal counsel for the respondents/ government.Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain has been appointed as the nodal counsel for the applicants.
