Engineer Rashid tells Delhi High Court authorities have asked ₹1.4 lakh per day for his parliament commute

Jailed Baramulla Member of Parliament (MP) Abdul Rashid Sheikh alias Engineer Rashid has approached the Delhi High Court alleging that the jail authorities have communicated to him that he will have to pay ₹1.45 lakh per day as expense for his commute from Tihar jail to parliament..Payment of travel expense was one of the conditions subject to which Rashid, jailed as undertrial in a terror funding case, was allowed to attend the parliament by the Delhi High Court.However, the High Court, in its order of March 26, had not specified any specific amount to be paid for the same..Rashid has now approached the Court again seeking deletion of the said condition, saying that the authorities are demanding ₹1.45 lakh per day for such travel.The matter was mentioned today before a Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela."I was told yesterday that I am required to pay ₹1.45 lakh per day to attend the parliament session. He is attending the session subject to the payment of travel expenses," the counsel for Rashid, advocate Vikhyat Oberoi said."Will Court determine the amount borne by the government? Can this issue be dealt with in your appeal," the Bench asked."I am not seeking reduction of the expense but for deletion of the condition. Twice I was allowed to attend without any such condition," the counsel submitted. "It is a conditional order, you want variation of that?" the Bench asked."Last time the people of the constituency had done crowd funding. Today I am attending, tomorrow I will not have money. Baramulla will go unrepresented. So I may not be allowed to attend the session. He is the parliamentarian who has to represent the people," the counsel for Rashid argued.The Court then said that the plea will be automatically listed for hearing tomorrow..Rashid is currently in Tihar Jail as an accused in a terror funding case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He was arrested in 2019.He had won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls by defeating current Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by over two lakh votes. He then approached the High Court seeking permission to attend the parliament.The Delhi High Court allowed his plea on March 26 subject to certain conditions one of which was that he will bear the travel expense from Tihar to parliament and back."The expense for the aforesaid travel and other arrangements shall be borne by the appellant," the High Court said in its order..[Read Live Coverage]
