Delhi court grants interim bail to Umar Khalid for 7 days to attend cousin's wedding

A Delhi court on Wednesday granted interim bail of seven days to Umar Khalid, one of the accused in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case..Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma court granted Khalid relief for seven days from December 28 to January 3 to attend his cousin sister's wedding."Considering the fact that the applicant wishes to attend the marriage of his first cousin and meet his relatives, the court deems it just and appropriate to grant him the desired relief," the judge ordered.Khalid was directed to furnish a personal bond of ₹20,000 along with two sureties of the same amount. As condition for bail, he was directed not to use social media or contact any witnesses or any person in connection with the case. Further, he should meet his family members, relatives and friends only and should remain at his house or at places where marriage ceremonies and functions are slated to take place, the Court directed..Khalid was arrested in September 2020 and charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly as well as several other offences under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).He has been in jail since then.His regular bail plea is currently pending before the Delhi High Court.The trial court had first denied bail to him in March 2022. He then approached the High Court. which also denied him relief in October 2022, prompting him to file an appeal before the top court.In May 2023, the Supreme Court sought the response of the Delhi Police in the matter. His plea before the top court was then adjourned 14 times.On February 14, 2024, he withdrew his bail plea from the Supreme Court citing a change in circumstances.On May 28, the trial court rejected his second bail petition leading to the an appeal before the High Court. A Division Bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur is hearing that plea. .Meanwhile, he moved the trial court for interim bail to attend the family event.
