The Supreme Court Collegium on Monday recommended the elevation of Patna High Court Acting Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. .The post is slated to fall vacant after the Collegium recommended the appointment of the current Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi, as a judge of the Supreme Court. .Justice Kumar completed his schooling at St. Michael's High School in Patna and graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University. He earned his LL.B. degree from the Campus Law Centre at Delhi University and enrolled as an advocate at the Patna High Court on July 9, 1991.He was appointed as an additional judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014. He was later transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he took the oath of office on January 7, 2015. He was confirmed as a permanent judge of the Patna High Court on April 21, 2016, and was transferred back on November 21, 2017.Since January 2025, he has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. .[Read Collegium Statement]
