Cleaning, washing, dry cleaning clothes is 'manufacturing' under Factories Act: Supreme Court

The Court held that for an activity to qualify as a manufacturing process, neither is it necessary for a transformation to occur nor must a new article come into existence.

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that the laundry business, including cleaning, washing and dry cleaning of clothes, falls under the definition of 'manufacturing process' and a unit which engages in the said tasks qualifies as a 'factory' under the Factories Act, 1948.
