Outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna made the functioning of the Supreme Court of India even more transparent, his successor Justice BR Gavai said on Tuesday. .Justice Gavai, who will assume office as the next CJI, emphasised that CJI Khanna's tenure was not about making a spectacle or noise for attention. Rather, it brought changes within the judiciary to ensure that the system evolves."Justice Khanna had very big shoes to fill. He started from Tis Hazari court. In Supreme Court, CJI Khanna ushered in transparency. CJI led the full court which passed a resolution to declare assets of the judges. He also released how judges are appointed in Supreme Court and High Courts," he said. .Speaking at the farewell organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for CJI Khanna, Justice Gavai said that CJI Khanna demonstrated firm and principled leadership in addressing instances of judicial misconduct."In two such instances, he acted with discretion and resolve taking appropriate steps to maintain dignity of the court while keeping the confidence and trust of his colleagues. Justice Khanna never shied away from speaking his mind.".Justice Gavai concluded that the CJI's tenure can be summarised through a poem by Dushyant Kumar:"सिर्फ हंगामा खड़ा करना मेरा मकसद नहीं, मेरी कोशिश है कि ये सूरत बदलनी चाहिए। मेरे सीने में नहीं तो तेरे सीने में सही, हो कहीं भी आग, लेकिन आग जलनी चाहिए।"["My aim is not just to create ruckus, my effort is to change this situation.If not in my heart, then certainly in yours, there may be fire anywhere, but the fire must burn."]
