The Supreme Court's Justice Surya Kant on Sunday told members of the Indian diaspora in Washington DC that the judiciary remains a unifying force, anchoring Indians at home and abroad to the principles of justice, equality and dignity.

Delivering the keynote address at an event hosted by the Washington Telangana Association, Justice Kant spoke at length on the enduring connection between the Indian diaspora and the homeland, not just through culture and tradition, but also through the institutions that uphold the country’s democratic ethos.

“What you have built here is more than a network,” he said, addressing a packed gathering of Indian-origin professionals and families in Greater Seattle.

“It is a community, a family, and a powerful reminder that while we may be thousands of miles from India, the heart of India — our values, our warmth, our celebration of diversity — continues to thrive."

While applauding the diaspora’s contributions in fields ranging from technology to education, the judge emphasised that true identity endures through constitutional ideals, not just cultural nostalgia.

“Tradition keeps us rooted in who we are, but it is the strength of India’s constitutional framework that safeguards the principles underpinning our identity—justice, fairness, and inclusivity.”

Justice Kant devoted a significant portion of his speech to highlighting the Indian judiciary’s evolving engagement with the diaspora, noting that the courts have taken key strides in making justice accessible to non-resident Indians (NRIs).

From addressing cross-border matrimonial disputes and inheritance issues to protecting fundamental rights, the judiciary, he said, has ensured that justice is not confined within India’s borders.

He referred to the courts’ procedural adaptations and recognition of international complexities.

“For the diaspora, this becomes a source of pride and reassurance, affirming that the values they hold dear are not only protected, but continually reaffirmed within India’s constitutional order.”

He went on to add,

“The Indian judiciary plays a unifying role in sustaining the diverse and democratic character of the nation. Through its reasoned decisions and moral authority, the judiciary not only resolves legal conflicts but also affirms a vision of justice that binds the nation together.”

Calling upon the audience to act as ambassadors of India’s rich cultural and constitutional legacy, Justice Kant concluded,

“Let us continue to be rooted yet forward-looking, proud yet inclusive, committed to building bridges across communities and generations.”
