The India International Arbitration Centre (IIAC) will convene a meeting of its Hosting Committee on March 25 to discuss India's bid for the XXIXth International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress in 2030.
The meeting will be chaired by IIAC Chairperson and former Supreme Court judge, Justice Hemant Gupta.
The IIAC’s proposal to host the ICCA Congress was submitted to the Department of Legal Affairs (DoLA) on February, and received an in-principle approval on February 28. Thus, the Government of India decided to bid for the ICCA Congress trough IIAC. The Centre also appointed Ajay Kumar Arora, Joint Secretary Ministry of Law as the Member Secretary of the committee
The ICCA Congress is a biennial event that brings together international arbitration professionals to discuss developments in dispute resolution. The bidding process for the 2030 Congress is expected to commence in the second half of 2025, requiring a detailed project report. The final selection will be made at the ICCA Governing Board Meeting in Madrid, Spain, in 2026.
Hosting the ICCA Congress will align with the objectives of the India International Arbitration Centre Act, 2019, which aims to position India as a key arbitration hub. India previously hosted the Fifth International Arbitration Congress in New Delhi in 1975.
The Hosting Committee includes legal professionals and arbitration experts from India and abroad:
Gourab Banerji, Senior Advocate
Shashank Garg, Senior Advocate
Vivek Kapoor, Barrister (UK)
Sameer Jain, Advocate
Payal Chawla, Advocate
Abhinav Bhushan, Advocate (Singapore)
Kabir Duggal, Advocate (USA)
Gitanjali Bajaj, DLA Piper (Australia)
Manish Aggarwal, Advocate (London)
The upcoming meeting will focus on planning and coordination for the bid submission. If successful, India will host the ICCA Congress in 2030, providing a platform for international arbitration discussions.
Last week, Union Law Ministry revealed that the Central government has allocated ₹7.5 crore over the past three years to the IIAC to promote and encourage institutional arbitration in India.
