Senior advocate Gopalakrishna Kurup will be the next Advocate General of Kerala.

The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting of the newly elected Left front ministry which was sworn in on Thursday.

Senior Advocate TA Shaji will be the new Director General of Prosecution.

Senior advocate Gopalakrishna Kurup was born in May 1953. He enrolled as an Advocate on September 20, 1976.

He started his practice at Kottayam in 1976, attached to the chambers of late M Thomas, ex MLA and advocate K George. He later shifted his practice to the Kerala High Court in 1984. He worked as junior to late advocate N Raghavakurup, ex MLA until 1991.

He has earlier served as a State Prosecutor for the Kerala government between 1999-2001.

He has also served as the Standing Counsel for the Mahatma Gandhi University (1998-2002), the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation (1993-1999), and the Cochin Devosom Board (2008-2010).

In 2005, he was elected the President of the Kerala High Court Advocates Association.

He was designated a senior advocate on July 29, 2010.

The former Advocate General, Senior Advocate CP Sudhakara Prasad had tendered his resignation from the post on Wednesday.

Prasad had been appointed by the LDF-led regime during its first tenure. Though the party was recently re-elected to form the government for another five years, Prasad is stated to have resigned citing health reasons.
