Prashant Bhushan resigns from CPIL, Common Cause and Swaraj Abhiyan

Advocate Prashant Bhushan has resigned from the Governing Councils of NGOs – Centre for PIL (CPIL), Common Cause and Swaraj Abhiyan.

Prashant Bhushan took this step after a complaint was filed against him for violation of Bar Council of India Rules on Professional Standards.

As per clause 9 of the Rules, an advocate should not represent establishments of which he is a member.

Citing that Prashant Bhushan had appeared for CPIL, Common Cause and Swaraj Abhiyan while being a member of the said organisations, one Retired Major SK Punia had filed a complaint before the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD).

The BCD had sought a response from Bhushan regarding the same. Bhushan had conceded that he had represented the above-mentioned NGOs in court.

Subsequently, Bhushan has now filed an affidavit informing the BCD of his resignation from CPIL, Common Cause and Swaraj Abhiyan.
