HNLU concludes Constitution@75 Series with Ambedkar Lecture, International Conference

The Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur (HLU) recently concluded its 'Constitution@75: HNLU Series' with a celebration of the 76th Republic Day.

Republic Day at HNLU began with the unfurling of the national flag by Vice-Chancellor, Prof (Dr) VC Vivekanandan which was followed by a cultural program.

The Republic Day celebrations were commemorated with the 4th Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Lecture, commencing with a floral tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar to honour his contributions as principal architect of Indian Constitution.

The memorial lecture was delivered by distinguished Jurist Professor, Justice G Raghuram on the theme, 'Contours of Judicial Review: Striking a Balance between Power Asymmetries in a Democratic Framework.'

Highlighting the evolving nature of constitutional interpretation to safeguard democratic values amidst rapid societal changes. Justice Raghuram also emphasized on judicial review as a crucial mechanism to balance governmental power and ensure accountability,

"The judiciary must adapt to societal changes, ensuring decisions remain fair, accountable, and just in an increasingly dynamic world," he said.

The Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Lecture also marked the conclusion of a two-day International Conference on the theme, 'Constitution@75: Evolving Text, Context and Transformations – Rights, Governance and Technology in Focus', which was part of the final chapter of the Constitution@75: HNLU Series.

The conference drew participants from 23 institutions and 15 States, with active participation from academicians, practitioners, and students. The participants engaged in discussions on 6 thematic sessions covering rights, governance, technology, and global constitutionalism.

Awards for the best speakers were presented by Justice Raghuram, Prof (Dr) Ranbir Singh, and Prof VC Vivekanandan to Rohini Ramdas Kalyankar (MNLU Mumbai), Shreya Ranjan (ITM University, Raipur), and Mohammed Saud ur Rehman Siddiqui (NLU Sonipat).

Prof Vivekanandan described Dr Ambedkar as a guiding light whose ideals continue to inspire constitutional governance and social justice.

“The Constitution’s relevance lies in its ability to evolve with time, meeting the aspirations of a changing society," he said.

During these celebrations, volume 10, Issue 1 of the HNLU Journal on Law and Social Sciences was also released. The occasion further saw the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Sihawa Lake Restaurant by the dignitaries.

The Constitution@75: HNLU Series Events

The six-month-long Constitution@75: HNLU Series had begun with the flag hoisting ceremony on August 15, 2024.

As part of this initiative, HNLU also hosted a one-day conclave in September for police officers to highlight constitutional principles in guiding policing and governance. This event had also seen the presence of Chhattisgarh High Court judge, Justice Sam Koshy.

In November, HNLU launched the Chhattisgarh Legal Education and Research Network (CG-LEARN) on Constitution Day. Inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister (Law), Arun Sao, it provides a collaborative platform to advance legal education across Chhattisgarh.

In December, a workshop on 'Shaping Truths: The Nexus of Media, AI, and Human Rights' was held to commemorate International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2024.

The Constitution@75: HNLU Series was organised by the School for Law and Governance and School for Law and Technology. Faculty members, Garima Panwar and Abhinav K Shukla under the guidance of Dr Deepak Kumar Shrivastava coordinated and curated the entire lecture series.
