The DM Harish School of Law emphasises practical legal education through moot courts, its in-house Indira Jaising Legal Aid Clinic, field visits and internship opportunities. Students are mentored by experienced faculty who include practicing lawyers, judges and scholars.
Notably, former Bombay High Court Judge, Justice Gautam Patel has also joined the faculty as Professor of Practice, bringing with him judicial experience and offering students unparalleled, first-hand insights from the bench to the classroom.
Guest lectures, Master lecture series and mentorship programs also provide students with valuable insights from industry experts, enhancing their understanding of current legal practices and trends. These interactions offer students an understanding of the legal profession and provide opportunities to network with leading figures in the field.
The curriculum fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing students for real-world legal challenges. Through a combination of innovative teaching methods and experiential learning opportunities (such as interactive case studies, simulation exercises, moot court competitions, client counselling competitions, lively debates, Model United Nations and the integration of technology in the classroom), students are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.
Students learn how to structure and draft complicated financial transactions, often using real-life deals as a starting point.
In litigation-based simulations, students practice examining witnesses, presenting evidence and delivering oral arguments, while in transactional simulations, they develop skills in interviewing and advising clients, negotiating disputes and drafting contracts, skills that are essential for success in today’s fast-paced legal environment.
These simulation sessions allow students to take on the role of a lawyer, honing the fundamental skills required to excel in any area of the legal profession.
Students are encouraged to intern with top law firms, corporations, NGOs and government agencies, gaining valuable practical experience and insight into the legal landscape.
The law school is strategically located at the midpoint of the city’s commercial triangle: BKC, Fort, and Lower Parel, thus offering students direct exposure to courts, top law firms and policy circles.
Equipped with digital classrooms, a dedicated moot court hall and access to extensive legal databases, the law school provides an environment conducive to focused study and real-world skill-building.
Vice Chancellor, HSNC University, Mumbai, Dr Hemlata K Bagla, says,
"As we continue to expand our offerings and enhance the quality of legal education, we aim to provide students with the tools they need to contribute meaningfully to the legal field and society."
“We are committed to fostering an environment where students not only gain legal knowledge but also develop critical thinking, teamwork and leadership skills through extra-curricular and co-curricular engagements. This holistic approach is key to shaping well-rounded legal professionals,” Dr Bagla added.
Speaking on the recently launched Indira Jaising Legal Aid Centre, Dr. Bagla further said,
“The newly inaugurated Indira Jaising Legal Aid Centre at D.M. Harish School of Law, plays a vital role in bridging the gap between legal knowledge and social justice, empowering communities while fostering a strong sense of responsibility and service in our future lawyers. Students who volunteer at the Indira Jaising Legal Aid Centre receive rigorous training to ensure they provide competent, ethical, and impactful legal assistance to under-served communities."
From air-conditioned smart classrooms and fully equipped computer labs to a resourceful library and cafeteria, DMHSL provides the ideal environment for academic and personal growth.
With a strong emphasis on ethics, analytical thinking and societal responsibility, the Law School aims to prepare graduates not just as lawyers, but as change-makers.
Whether aspiring to become litigators, legal advisors, public policy experts or judicial officers, students are trained to navigate the complexities of the legal world with clarity and confidence.
DMHSL believes in shaping well-rounded individuals, not just great lawyers. This is reflected in the variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities (including cultural activities and leadership workshops) available to students.
The campus offers a close-knit, supportive environment, where students connect over discussions in the cafeteria or unwind in the gaming room, enjoying games like chess, carom or table tennis.
These spaces offer a chance to build lasting friendships and professional networks, while maintaining a balance between academic and personal growth.
The University’s annual fest, Idalia and Annual Sports Day add excitement to campus life, offering students a platform to showcase their talents. Students are encouraged to grow both academically and personally, making their time at DMHSL a truly enriching experience.
At DMHSL, students gain valuable exposure beyond the classroom through year-round guest lectures, immersive activities during Induction Week, Career Expo, Model United Nations (MUN), field visits and more, thus fostering a well-rounded and engaging academic experience.
